Grovelands Park
44 Queen Elizabeth's Drive
Southgate
London
N14 6RD

Grovelands Park is the jewel in the crown of the parks in the Borough of Enfield. On April 13th 2013 it was 100 hundred years since the grounds of Grovelands were opened as a public Park. This was celebrated in a very special way over the weekend of May 18 & 19 with a series of events, music commemorations and publications involving and benefiting the local community. The hugely successful Award nominated event brought together local people of all ages and ethnicities who share and enjoy this wonderful local amenity.

Grovelands Park was originally part of the primeval forest that had been a source of charcoal since the Middle ages and the area between Southgate and Winchmore Hill, until 200 years ago, were part of an estate called Lords Grove. What we now know as Grovelands Park really goes back to 1797 when Walker Gray of the Taylor Walker Brewing family had the money and vision to acquire the land and commission the architect Nash together with the landscape gardener Humphrey Repton to build and lay out the grounds of his new classically inspired country house. Back then it was called Southgate Grove but was later changed to Grovlelands. The result was what is considered the finest example of a Nash Country House with landscaped parkland and a high point of English Domestic architecture and landscape Art.

The earlier design involved the creation of the lake and a long Carriage drive that started on Alderman's Hill and came into the park near the Woodman then passed the lake on the way to the house. The house went through various descendants from the family. By 1902 the family had sold much of the surrounding estate for housing but the house remained but was empty from 1907-1916. During the First World War it was loaned to be used as a Hospital for injured soldiers. In 1921 it was sold to the Royal Northern Hospital. It was used as a convalescent home until it closed in 1977. The Priory Group bought the house in 1985 and did restoration work before it opened as a private clinic in 1986. It has had some notable clients: General Pinochet, Susan Boyle and Shane MacGowan.

At an auction in 1902 there was a plan to sell the parkland to a consortium to build a Woodland City Estate but mercifully local opposition put paid to that. Eventually Southgate Urban Council stepped in and bought 60 acres of Parkland.

On Saturday April 12th 1913 the land was officially opened as a public park and later they extended it to 90 acres with the acquisition of some of the ancient woodland at the Church Hill end of the park. It is now preserved forever as the Grovelands Park we love as an Oasis of green space in a mass of housing.

Now in these Covid19 times it is appreciated even more as a place of peace and tranquillity, where residents can walk and enjoy the nature in a safe space, an important role it has played in the lives of the local community over the years. The Friends Of Grovelands Park work to preserve the park for future generations
